How a drywall company shows up in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI answers
Where the AI assistants get their list of local drywall contractors, why plain price-and-service pages get quoted, and the six things to fix on your profile and site.
Ask ChatGPT "who does drywall repair in [your town]" and it will name three or four companies, with a sentence about each. Ask Google and the AI Overview at the top of the results does the same before anyone scrolls to the map. If your company is not in those answers, you did not lose a ranking battle. You were never considered, because the assistant could not find a clear statement of what you do and where.
This is fixable, and for drywall it is easier than for most trades, because so few competitors have done anything at all.
Where the answers come from
The assistants do not have a secret directory. They read the same public sources a human would, in roughly this order:
- Your Google Business Profile: category, services list, description, reviews and your replies to them.
- Your website, if you have one and it loads quickly enough to be fetched.
- Review text on Google, Yelp, Nextdoor and the rest.
- Directory listings where your name, address and phone appear consistently.
- Local news, supplier pages, builder association member lists, anywhere your name appears with "drywall" and a town.
Then they summarize. The companies that get named are the ones whose sources say the same specific thing in plain language: "drywall repair and finishing in Boise, Idaho, since 2014, most repairs under $500." The companies that get skipped say "a family-owned business dedicated to quality" and nothing else.
Say what you do in words a machine can repeat
Go through your profile description, your website home page and your service pages and check whether each contains, as a sentence a person could quote, the service, the place and a price range or a timeframe. Examples that get quoted:
- "We repair drywall holes, cracks and water damage in Tacoma and Pierce County. Most patches run $150 to $450 and are scheduled within the week."
- "Popcorn ceiling removal in the Twin Cities, $1 to $3 per square foot plus skim coat and prime."
- "Hang, tape and finish to level 5 for builders and homeowners in Hillsborough County."
Examples that get skipped: "Exceptional craftsmanship for all your drywall needs." The assistant has nothing to repeat.
The six fixes, in order
One. Primary category "Drywall contractor" on Google. The assistants lean on Google's category to decide which trade you are in. "General contractor" puts you in a different list.
Two. Fill the services list with named services. Drywall repair, water damage repair, popcorn ceiling removal, texture matching, basement drywall, level 5 finish, each with a one-line description and a range. These appear almost verbatim in AI answers.
Three. A website with one page per service. Five pages is enough. Each page states the service, the area and a price range in the first paragraph, then explains the process. 49.4% of drywall companies have no website, which means the assistant is working from a Google listing with 3 reviews and no description. A site is the single largest change you can make.
Four. An FAQ on the site with real questions. "Can you match knockdown texture?" "Do you paint after the repair?" "How much does it cost to drywall a two-car garage?" Write the answers the way you say them on the phone. Mark them up as FAQ schema if your site builder allows; if not, plain headings and paragraphs still get read.
Five. Reviews that mention the service. When you ask for a review at the walkthrough, ask the customer to say what you did: "if you could mention it was the ceiling, that helps." Then reply to the review naming the job. A profile with thirty reviews that say "popcorn ceiling" is a profile the assistant associates with popcorn ceilings.
Six. Consistent name, address, phone everywhere. If Google says "Smith Drywall LLC" and Yelp says "Smith's Drywall and Paint" with a different phone number, the assistant may treat them as two businesses or trust neither. Pick one form and fix the big directories.
Let the crawlers in
Check that your site's robots.txt does not block GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended. Some site builders and security plugins block them by default. If you cannot find the file, ask whoever built the site to confirm those four are allowed. A blocked crawler means the assistant can read your Google profile but not your prices.
Also check load time on a phone. The assistants fetch pages with short timeouts, and a site with a 12 megabyte hero video fails silently. Three seconds or less.
What to expect
AI answers are not a traffic firehose for a drywall company. They are a small, high-intent stream: the homeowner who asked ChatGPT for a recommendation and got your name is already most of the way to calling. The changes above take a weekend, cost nothing, and they are the same changes that improve your Google map ranking, so there is no trade-off.
Measure it simply. Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the five questions a homeowner in your town would ask about drywall, and note whether you appear. Compare your review count and website status to the benchmark report at the same time; the shops that get named are almost always the ones past the 75th percentile of 10 reviews with a working site.
Frequently asked
Do I need to write "AI optimized" content or use special tools? No. The assistants reward the same thing a homeowner rewards: plain statements of service, area and price. Anyone selling a drywall company an "AI SEO package" with keyword density reports is selling 2012.
Will the assistant quote my prices and lock me in? It may repeat your range, which is why you publish ranges and not points. "Most patches $150 to $450" leaves room for the three-foot hole over a stairwell. A customer who arrives with your range in mind is easier to quote, not harder.
I have no website. Can I still show up? Sometimes, from the Google profile alone, if the services list and reviews are strong. But the assistant has far more to work with from a five-page site, and the ones with a site have a median of 6 reviews against 1 without. Start with the website essentials guide.
